1. how does this table differ from the one below it that sells for half the price?
i did read the reviews of the table below. i telephoned all things cedar, to ask if the problems had been addressed, as the reviews are 2 or 3 years old.
the very nice man on the phone wasn't sure the issues had been addressed, but he believed they had. so, since i had a chance to purchase this table at slightly less than the price listed on the table below, i did.
this is what i found:
1. there were plenty of screws, the right amount of bolts, nuts, washers
2. the directions were feeble -- not enough diagrams, and very minimal instructions for assembly.
3. one of the table boards arrived warped
4. the benches and table all wobble
you need to know, i had a professional wood worker assemble this set with me, and without his help, i'd have been unable to put together this table and benches.
5. although the writing says this table is good to go, to be put outside, the wood worker advised me it needs to be finished -- treated with something first -- before putting it outside; otherwise the rain will warp the boards. although cedar is known for being good outdoor furniture, the lumber for this set is cut rather thin, and thus the wood is unable to take weathering, without being treated, first.
6. i am using it as an indoor table and for that, it is fine. i pushed one end against the wall to stop the table wobble.
7. a previous reviewer found the table and benches tip when weight -- like some one sitting or leaning -- is applied to an end. the wood worker and i widened the bench leg attachment points (we had to go get more lumber to do that) and we simply attached the table legs where the instructions said to --
well, actually the instructions said to attach the legs approximately 14.5 inches from the end. we measured they reached closer to 20 inches. thus the table legs are indeed closer to the center of the table than the instructions imply. thus the table is less stable than the directions for assembly would lead one to believe.
for the price -- and i purchased it, with delivery for 348 dollars, it seems like an acceptable deal.
if i had had to pay more, i would have been really really angry with the results.i think all things cedar could do a spectacular job of creating kits like this one, if they just put a little more effort into it, and supplied slightly better wood.
